What is trauma insurance?

If you’ve ever wondered ‘is trauma insurance worth it’ or asked ‘what is trauma cover’:

  • Trauma insurance (also called ‘critical illness insurance’ and ‘recovery insurance’) is insurance for a specified illness or injury

If successful, trauma insurance:

  • Provides a lump sum payment for your medical treatment and to give you ‘breathing space’ to recover

  • Is paid regardless of whether you must stop work or are permanently disabled because of your specified illness or injury

Who can make a trauma insurance claim?

What’s covered under trauma insurance policies can differ between insurers. It’s important that you’re familiar with your policy’s product disclosure statement.

You can make a trauma insurance claim if:

  • You have a trauma insurance policy

  • You’re diagnosed with or suffer a critical illness or serious injury that’s detailed in your trauma insurance policy

You wouldn't meet the eligibility requirements for a trauma insurance claim if:

  • You don’t have a trauma insurance policy

Your illness or injury:

  • Isn’t specified in your trauma insurance policy

  • Is subject to exclusions or waiting periods

What are the most common trauma insurance claims?

The most common trauma insurance claims are for:

  • Cancer

  • Heart attack

  • Coronary bypass

  • Stroke

What other illnesses or injuries are covered in a trauma insurance policy?

Many more critical illnesses and injuries can be included in a trauma insurance policy, such as:

  • Alzheimer’s disease and dementia

  • Blindness

  • Deafness

  • Quadriplegia and paraplegia

  • Motor neurone disease

  • Chronic lung disease, kidney failure or liver disease

Trauma insurance claim FAQs

Trauma insurance vs TPD, what’s the difference?

Trauma insurance and total and permanent disability insurance (TPD) are two different types of insurance policy. Many Australians have both forms of insurance.

  • Trauma insurance protects you if you’re critically ill or seriously injured and require significant medical treatment to recover. If successful it provides a lump sum payment regardless of whether you return to work

  • TPD replaces your income (up to a defined monetary amount) if you’re permanently disabled because of illness or accident and can’t ever return to work
